Hardwoods including teak and oak are full of natural oil.
These timbers can be left to weather in the elements completely
untreated. Because of their resin content they are extremely
durable and will last for centuries. You can choose to oil these
timbers to accentuate the natural grain.
With poorer quality hardwoods it is essential to protect them
from rot. Micro-porous stains are now used extensively. See
http://www.sikkens.co.uk. These paints breathe enabling
trapped moisture to travel out of the wood. Painted timber is
now much less vulnerable to cracking than it was previously and
removing flaked paint should be a thing of the past. |
